Orange County Fire Rescue has added yet another Hackney to their fleet of special support vehicles with a model TR1882 Mass Casualty tractor and trailer. The trailer is pulled by an International 7600 tractor with a Cummins ISM, 425 hp engine. The trailer supports regional response teams for the entire State of Florida from its central Florida staging location.

Since the primary mission of the apparatus is to transport large quantities of equipment and supplies to a mass casualty incident, storage capacity was paramount in the decision as to what was needed. The Hackney trailer provided 1575 cu.ft. of organized space for rapid deployment at the scene, plus four (4) 16-ft long coffin compartments on the roof, adding another 130+ cu.ft. of storage for a total of over 1700 cu.ft.

The four fifth wheel compartments are constructed and insulated to refrigeration body standards and provides a temperature controlled environment for medical fluids. The cooling unit operates off shorepower and generator through an automatic transfer switch for constant temperature control in the hot and humid Florida climate.

The left and right sides of the body are redundant regarding layout and supplies transported. A total of 100 long backboards are stored onboard for rapid deployment. “H” medical oxygen tanks are stored on both sides of the trailer and are deployed using all-terrain hand carts.

Electrical power is produced by a 12-kw ONAN QuietOne diesel generator that powers the environmental system; (2) tripod flood lights; (2) 900-watt MagnaFire flood lights on each upper side body (total 4); 120vac fluorescent lights in all compartments and numerous strategically placed power outlets both inside the compartments and around the perimeter of the trailer.

Both the tractor and trailer is fully multiplexed with umbilical connections that allow the tractor to be quickly disconnected and utilized for movement of other trailered apparatus in the fleet, as required. The apparatus fully NFPA 1901 compliant and features all Whelen LED warning lights in all zones, supplemented by a LED traffic direction light bar on the rear and auxiliary upper brake lights. All tail lights and marker lights are LED. The compartments are lighted by both the 120vac lights and LED strip lights recessed into the side walls of all compartments.

Both the tractor and trailer tandem axles are air-suspension equipped providing a shock resistant ride for some of the more sensitive equipment being transported.

The design of the trailer provides for one hundred (100) casualties and includes all equipment mandated for a UASI response vehicle. Considering the magnitude of the list of required equipment, there is very little of the 1700 cu.ft. of space not utilized. The beauty of the Hackney design is that all this equipment is easily accessible, thus providing efficient retrieval of each category of equipment and supplies for small numbers of casualties all the way up to 100 casualties.
