Hackney

 Trailer

CITY OF MINNEAPOLIS FIRE DEPARTMENT
Minneapolis, Minnesota

The Minneapolis Fire Department determined to maximize the amount of USAR and technical rescue equipment they could move on a single apparatus and chose a Hackney TR1490 trailer to meet their requirements. The trailer was patterned after those utilized by Los Angeles County, except they chose to use a Spartan Gladiator tractor with Severe Duty package. The tractor is equipped with a 425 hp Detroit engine, 18,000 lb. front axle, 24,000 lb. rear axle and multiplexed electrical system. The short 135" wheelbase permits the tractor and trailer to maneuver through congested traffic and down narrow lanes and tight street corners without little effort, something that would be impossible with a straight frame body configuration.

The trailer features 14-compartments with roll-up doors, eight of which are 90" high. The than normal compartments were required to allow added storage capacity without increasing the overall length. Both the tractor and trailer rear axles are equipped with air suspension. All lube points on the tractor and trailer are protected by a Lincoln automatic lubrication system.

Technical rescue operations are enhanced with a PTO driven, 185 cfm air compressor capable of operating jack hammers, air knives or conventional inflation processes.

A pintle hitch was installed on the rear of the tractor to allow the tractor, as the needs arises, to move heavy utility type trailers and equipment. 10,000# receivers are mounted on the left and right sides of the trailer for attachment of rope tie-off rings.

All emergency lighting is Whelen LED. The siren is a Federal electronic Q2B. Incorporated into the multiplexed system is a rear traffic advisor, color backup camera and graphic warning systems displayed on the VISTA LCD screen in the cab.

There are flood lights incorporated around the perimeter of the trailer and telescoping lights on the front and rear. These are powered by a 10,000 watt Onan diesel generator with 20-gallon fuel tank under the front fifth wheel plate.

The compartments are configured for special applications and includes multiple slide out trays, three PacTrac slide-out tool boards, ramp for loading and unloading of Stanley rescue tool, transverse tunnels for timbers and shoring panels and twelve spare SCBA bottles.
