LOS ANGELES COUNTY FIRE DEPARTMENT Los Angeles, California
Los Angeles County is one of the most populated counties
in the United States and straddles one of the most
active fault lines in America. The surrounding mountains
are subject to heavy rains off the Pacific that create
devastating mudslides. All this, coupled with routine
search and rescue responses, adds up to one very busy
USAR team. The equipment required to handle these
situations became impossible for the USAR team to
transport on a conventional rescue truck thats
when the county approached Hackney to work with them
to develop a tractor-trailer that would meet the unique
requirements of this unique fire department. The end
result is now three fully equipped teams strategically
located around the mountains and densely populated
Los Angles County.
Subsequently, Los Angeles County
placed three Hackney TR1482 trailers into service.
Each trailer features 14 compartments, each 43"
deep, providing over 1000 cubic feet of useable storage
space. All roll-up doors permit easy maneuverability
around the apparatus by multiple team members without
dodging swing-out doors.
The tractor is designed to function
as a stand-alone apparatus. It features a Freightliner
FL112, four-door cab with a raised roof and is powered
by a Caterpillar C12, 410-horse power engine and an
Allison HD4060 transmission. The rear of the tractor
is fully enclosed around a frame rail providing storage
compartments for a generator and other equipment.
Removable bed rails were designed that, once the trailer
is dropped, can be deployed around the rear of the
tractor to form a transport bed to move equipment
into remote areas.
A multi-valve hydraulic system provides
power for a front bumper mounted winch with left and
right independently operated capstands for mountain
rescue operations. The hydraulic system also powers
a 185 cfm air compressor with two quick-connected
outlets for connection of commercial air hammers and
siphon type vacuum nozzle for extracting loose earth
around cave-in victims.
Both the tractor and trailer have
independent generators that power floodlights. The
tractor has four removable 750W tri-pods and 750W
fixed floodlights on the left and right upper cab
roof. The trailer has two 750W tri-pods, plus two
750W flood on the left and right roof rails and one
on the upper rear.
Compartments are lighted with
both 12V halogen lights and 120V fluorescent lights.
Rope tie-off points rated at 10,000 pounds are installed
on the left and right rear of the trailer and under
the front bumper of the tractor.
