THE CITY OF FT. LAUDERDALE FIRE RESCUE
Ft. Lauderdale, Florida
The Fort Lauderdale Fire-Rescue Department Hazardous Materials Response Team is one of four regionally posted HazMat teams that not only responds to calls within the City, but throughout the state of Florida. The HazMat Team also works with several local, regional and federal agencies to develop protocols for different types of hazardous material emergencies. To store and transport the various equipment and protective gear necessary for hazardous materials emergencies, the team chose a Hackney model TC1882 hazmat trailer with a Spartan Gladiator tractor.
The 41-ft hazmat trailer features sixteen (16) exterior compartments and a rear command and logistics center. Located on the roof is a rapid-deploy observation platform, two roof compartments and Nightscan light tower. An awning is provided on the road side providing staging areas and facilitation of rehab operations.
The tractor is a four-door cab Spartan Gladiator with seating for six and a 400 HP Cummins engine. All NFPA 1901 lighting, scene lighting, compartment lights, ground lights and other 12VDC features are fully integrated between the tractor and trailer using V-MUX multiplexing with quick-disconnect feature, dramatically reducing the amount of wiring between the two pieces and reducing stress related issues with connections. The tractor also provides generator power from a 25kw PTO generator connected to the trailer via a 125-amp umbilical cord connection. The generator also provides power for the beverage center and freezer. The rear command center is outfitted with cabinets, a desk, swivel style office chair and flip-up seating for two.
To accommodate the department’s vast array of equipment, cavernous 43” floor-to-ceiling deep
compartments house a combination of slide-out and fixed trays, shelving, cord reels and SCBA storage for 8 bottles on the curb side.
