CHEROKEE
COUNTY FIRE & EMERGENCY SERVICES
Canton, Georgia
Cherokee County lies just north (approximately 20
miles) of the Atlanta metroplex where the foothills
of the southern tip of the Great Smokey Mountains
begin. Interstate 575 dissects the county and the
is main route to the recreational and vacation communities
spread around the mountains and lakes of the region.
Battalion
Chief Jeff Whidby and his team spearheaded the project
to provide a means of responding in a single apparatus
to any type of hazardous materials incident within
the North Georgia region. The culmination of the teams
efforts was the purchase of a Hackney TR100 HazMat
tractor/trailer. The tractor of choice was a Spartan
Gladiator with a 3-door ELFD cab and 24 raised
roof. The tractor is powered by a Cummins ISM, 500-hp
engine.
The 3-door
cab provides space for a custom command and resource
center with a desk stretching across the rear wall
and turning down the street side wall. The desk is
stainless steel for easy sanitation and durability.
The cabinets are aluminum matching the interior. A
heavy vinyl curtain separates the front of the cab
from the rear command center.
The 34-foot
trailer provides almost 1300 cu.ft. of useable storage
space (based on actual door pass-thru measurements),
yet keeping the overall length of the apparatus from
bumper-to-bumper to around 52-ft.
The tractor
and trailer are fully multiplexed, with the tractor
capable of communicating with the trailer interface.
All marker lights, tail lights and emergency warning
lights (except light bar) are LED. A color rearview
camera is interfaced to the cab VISTA display panel
so the driver can keep an eye on whats
going on way-back-there.
A 25 kw
Onan PTO generator on the tractor provides plenty
of power for both the tractor and trailer. The tractor
using generator power for the air conditioner, 120VAC
interior lighting, power outlets and the vented fume
hood. Power to the trailer is provided through a 100-amp
umbilical connection for operating strategically placed
power outlets, cord reel and rear tripod flood lights.
Additionally, a 2000 watt inverter provides power
through an automatic transfer relay while the vehicle
is enroute. All trailer compartment lighting is augmented
using 120VAC fluorescent lights recessed in the top
of the compartments.
The
massive compartment space is easily accessible. Note
the ground to compartment floor height, a unique Hackney
feature that permits access to space in the top of
the 82 high compartments. Speedi-Dri hoppers
are shown near the center compartments. Two 40
deep slide-out tool boards will keep all shovels,
brooms and other salvage equipment readily accessible.
Pro-Poly
boxes were designed for storage of specific equipment.
Compartments shown at the bottom of #3, #5, and #6
are transverse. Everything was pre-planned and has
a place. No wasted space when its all loaded.
