CHARLOTTE FIRE DEPARTMENT Charlotte, North Carolina
The Charlotte Fire Department operates a 37 foot long
Hackney TR1382 Extended USAR Trailer for responses
to collapse rescue operations in and around one of
the fastest growing metropolitan areas in the United
States. With the rapid industrial growth of the Charlotte/Mecklenburg
area, this teams stays busy.
The trailer is pulled by an International
4900, 4-door tractor with a 330 hp engine and Allison
MD3060 automatic transmission. The tractor interfaces
with the trailer ABS system and features aluminum
alloy wheels on both the tractor and trailer. The
rear suspension for the trailer is a Neway air system.
The rear of the trailer has two
separate 42" wide x 50" high x 12.5
deep storage tunnels that carry 12 shoreform
trench panels, various sizes of shoring timbers and
conventional sheets of 4 x 8 plywood.
Two belly compartments are provided just forward of
the rear trailer wheels that extend transversely to
either side of the trailer and carry stokes baskets,
tripods and other long equipment.
There are fold-down ramps in the
#3 left and right side compartments to facilitate
loading and unloading of a Stanley tool and equipment
carts. All the other compartments are configured with
1000 lb. capacity slide-out trays, adjustable slide/tilt
trays, air bag storage slots, (3) 40" deep x
68" high two-sided slide-out tool boards and
spare SCBA bottle storage tubes. 16 foot awnings are
provided on the left and right sides of the trailer.
The electrical system features multiplexing,
reducing the wiring from the tractor to the trailer
to one single small harness rather than a number of
bulky harnesses. The multiplexed electrical system
also provides remote factory diagnostics via an integral
telephone modem. All NFPA warning lights are LED with
a Whelen strobe light bar. A 25kw PTO generator is
incorporated into the tractor to provide power to
the trailer and powers two (2) 9000 watt multi-directional
Will-Burt NightScan light towers, two (2) 240VAC Hannay
cord reels with split circuit power distribution boxes,
two (2) tri-pod flood lights on the left and right
front of the trailer, four (4) 750 watt flood lights
in the upper left and right roof rails and 120v fluorescent
lights in all compartments.
