Like many rural fire departments,
Flint Fire & Rescue sometimes has difficulty getting
adequate day-time response personnel. In the case
of auto accidents it is usually critical that both
a rescue and pumper respond. To make the choice of
what type of apparatus to dispatch, Flint elected
to purchase a Hackney RP0973 Rescue Pumper.
Unlike most so-called rescue pumpers, the Hackney
design is a true rescue truck that just happens to
have pump and water capabilities, not a pumper that
adds a couple of high-side compartments and calls
itself a rescue. The RP0973 features over 500 cubic
of compartment space within a 17.5 ft. body, in addition
to a 500 gallon water tank and 30 gallon foam cell.
A lot of space for such a maneuverable wheelbase!
Thats something that is important when attempting
to response into tight areas.
The body is mounted on an International
7400 cab/chassis with four-wheel drive, 330 hp engine,
Allison MD3060 automatic transmission and 70 gallon
fuel tank. The chassis features chromed vertical exhaust,
polished aluminum alloy wheels, mulitplexed electrical
system, automatic snow chains and 270 amp Leece-Neville
alternator.
The pump is a 750 gpm Hale PSD750.
An Akron 3096 Foam Eductor is provided to assist in
extending the firefighting water capacity. A 2-1/2"
discharge is provided on the pump panel and right
side wheelhouse panel.1-1/2" pre-connects are
installed on the extended front bumper and slide-out
hose tray above the pump panel. The trays slides out
either side of the body for easy reloading of the
hose.
Special accommodations are provided
for storage of a 12-foot folding ladder, stokes basket
and two long backboards. Storage tubes are provided
for nine spare SCBA bottles. In addition to the multiple
shelves and trays in the side compartments, a special
extrication tool compartment is provided in the rear
with a 600 lb. floor tray for spreader, cutter and
portable power unit and two slide/tilt trays for rams,
hoses, chains, fuel and other accessories. Two electric
rewind hydraulic hose reels are mounted in the top
of this compartment. A 9000 lb. Ramsey portable winch
mounts into a 10,000 lb. receiver under the front
bumper.
A 15kw hydraulic generator provides
power for the 6000 watt NightScan light tower, two
cord reels and multiple power outlets.
The body 12 volt electrical system
is multiplexed and features Whelen strobe lights and
light bar. A Whelen Executor siren, Backstop System
and back-up rearview camera.
