The Crewe Fire Department, located on US Hwy 460 in Crew, Virginia, purchased a Hackney DF0973R rescue for multi-purpose responses. The 19-ft body was specifically designed to function as a support vehicle for the fire department, as well as routine rescue operations. It is mounted on an International 4400 cab/chassis with a DT470, 330 hp engine with plenty of power to handle the rolling southern Virginia hill country.
The body features nine (9) large
compartments, plus two large roof top coffin compartments.
A 9000 pound portable Warn winch is stored in the
extended front bumper and can move moved to three
other positions around the truck; left side, right
side and rear. The unique fold-down bumper, first
introduced by Hackney, permits easy removal from its
stored and operational position (click
here for details). The bumper is a heavy gauge
channel steel type painted to match the apparatus.
The electrical system is fully multiplexed
(click
here for details) and features a LCD control panel
for simple operation of all systems, textual diagnostics,
chassis and maintenance information and backup camera
monitor. All emergency lights, tail lights and clearance
lights are LED. A Federal Q2B and PA300 electronic
siren provide traffic clearing modes, along with dual
Grover Stuttertone air horns.
An Onan Protec 25,000 watt PTO generator is mounted inside the left front compartment and provides power for a light tower with combination MagnaFire IR flood lights and two (2) metal halide flood lights. In addition, two MagnaFire IR floods are recessed in the upper left and right sides of the body and two (2) portable MagnaFire tri-pod flood lights are located on the left rear body. Remote power is provided by a Hannay cord reel with 200-ft 10/4 cable that permits full 30-amp load distribution through a split circuit lighted power distribution box on the end of the cord. Numerous power outlets are provided around the body, some of which are powered by both the generator and shorepower circuit through an automatic transfer relay.
The departments SCBA's can be refilled
from a space saving cascade fill station (click here
for details) (route to Features - SCBA Station) located
in the right rear compartment that can fill two SCBA's
simultaneously, either 2216 or 4500 psi, from six
(6) 6000 psi DOT storage cylinders. Two (2) Holmatro
hydraulic hose reels are installed in the rear extrication
compartment. This compartment accommodates all hydraulic
rescue tools, power unit and accessories (click

SCBA storage rack that accommodates eight (8) complete
SCBA's with "backup and go" donning capability; Speedi-Dry
dispenser for up to 400 pounds; fifteen (15) spare
SCBA bottle storage tubes next to fill station; two
(2) 68" high x 36" deep two-sided slide-out tool boards;
