SPOKANE
VALLEY FIRE DEPARTMENT Spokane, Washington
The Spokane Valley Fire Department
covers most of the metro area surrounding the city
of Spokane, Washington. The variations of topography
and extended mileage coverage zone required a unique
type of rescue that was capable of serving multitasked
responses for rescue operations, as well as fire support
services.
The Hackney DF982 Heavy Rescue body
was selected as best meeting the rigid requirements
for this task, since it was the only body available
in the required wheelbase restrictions that could
accommodate the vast array of equipment and services
from one single apparatus. Besides rescue responses,
the apparatus also serves as a mobile air refill unit
and features a 26.5 cfm Ingersoll-Rand cast iron 5,000
psi compressor coupled with the RevolveAir 2X2 fill
station. Regardless of the extreme temperature variations,
they can not outrun the fill rate capabilities of
the Avenger 36 air system. Due to high desert heat
during the summer months, the compressor is mounted
in the wheelhouse compartment with a desert air flow
system that keeps the compressor running well under
the temperature maximums. The compressor's 20hp, 3-phase
motor is powered by a 40kw 3-phase ONAN ProTec PTO
generator mounted within the left forward compartment
protected from the harsh environmentally abrasive
conditions of the response area. The compressor can
also run from a built-in 150 amp, 3-phase shorepower
with transfer switch. The generator also can simultaneously
operate the 6000 watt Will-Burt NightScan light tower
and two (2) 750W tripod flood lights and other auxiliary
equipment off the cord reels.
Other features include a 12,000
lb. Ramsey winch on the extended front bumper, which
features a fire service type stainless steel bumper.
The rear tail compartment is specifically designed
to accommodate all extrication tools and support equipment.
The 82" high x 42"wide x 40" deep compartment
has a 600 lb. tray at lower floor level within easy
reach of firefighters of the heavy hydraulic spreader,
cutter and portable hydraulic power unit. An adjustable
slide/tilt tray above the floor tray accommodates
rams, chains, fuel, hose and other associated equipment.
In the top of the compartment are two (2) electric
rewind hydraulic hose reels, a utility air hose reel
and a cord reel. All reels feature a slide-out roller
guide assembly that allows the hoses to be deployed
sideways without damaging painted surfaces of the
body. Two (2) 78" high x 36" deep two-sided
tool boards, slide-out racks for four complete SCBAs,
eight spare SCBA bottle storage tubes, storage hangers
for collapse rescue air shores and multiple shelves
and trays round out the equipment storage capabilities.
A full length awning is provided on the right side
of the body for rehab operations and shelter during
air refill duties.
The body is mounted on a Freightliner
FL70 with 300 hp Cummins ISC, 950 lb.ft torque engine,
extended cab with raised roof, vertical exhaust, air
horns and Whelen NFPA 1901 strobe lighting package.
