Winton, located in northeastern North Carolina, covers a large rural area along US Hwy 13 and US Hwy 158 to the Virginia border. The department responds to everything from auto and truck accidents on the busy US highways to frequent farm accidents that require off-road access. They chose the Chevrolet C5500 chassis for its short turning radius and affordable four-wheel drive option. It features a beefy 330 hp, 620 lb/ft torque diesel engine and Allison transmission.
A Hackney model LR0864, 14-ft. light rescue body was chosen to maximize storage capacity to meet the many missions for which the vehicle would be utilized. Since the department is volunteer and many of the responders will typically drive directly to the scene, a slide-out SCBA rack was incorporated into the rear compartment that accommodates six complete SCBA’s in a backup and go donning configuration. Tunnel compartments were provided in the top of the wheelhouse compartment for a stokes basket stretcher and two long back boards. All rescue air bags are stored in individual vertical slots in the aft section of the wheelhouse compartment.
The electrical system is fully mulitplexed. All interior and exterior lighting is LED and includes: tail lights; traffic advisor light bar; NFPA emergency warning lights and compartment lights. Flood lighting and electrical power is provided by a portable generator on a roll-out tray. The vehicle was sold by C.W. Williams and Co, Hackney’s North and South Carolina and western Virginia dealer.
Extended front bumper includes a 12,000# winch. Set-back front axle and tight cramp-angle on the C5500 affords a very short turning radius even with a 176” wheelbase.
