Swan Quarter is located on the northern shores of the Pamlico Sound where the Ocracoke ferry departs on its two hour journey to the North Carolina Outer Banks.
Swan Quarter chose the new Hackney HLR rescue, a model that provides lots of storage and load capacity well inside shrinking budget constraints. The chassis is a Chevrolet C5500 with four-wheel drive, 330hp diesel and Allison 2250 EVS automatic transmission. The C5500 provides a tight turning radius due to its setback front axle. The truck cab provides excellent visibility to the driver sitting in an air suspension seat looking over a sloping hood. The huge rearview mirrors add additional safety.
Electrical power is supplied by a direct-drive 12kw PTO generator. A NightScan light tower, mounted on the roof behind a limb guard and two removable tripod flood lights provide a high degree of lumens for night operations. A 240VAC cord reel with 200-ft of 10/4 cable provides two 30-amp 120VAC circuits out of the four outlets in the power distribution box. A 240VAC outlet powers a hydraulic rescue tool power unit. All warning lights, clearance lights, tail lights, traffic advisor and compartment lights are LED. The vehicle is fully multiplexed providing virtually maintenance free operations. Compartments are configured with shelves, trays, tool boards and other storage accommodations specifically for the equipment carried by the fire department.
Note the huge 48" wide x 42" high wheelhouse compartment, the largest in the industry and standard on all Hackney HLR models. Transverse tunnel across the top stores a stokes basket stretcher and two long backboards retrievable from either side of the body.
9000 lb. portable winch inserted into side body receivers rated to new NFPA 1901 requirements for 10,000 lbs.
