Wendell Fire Department, located just east of the capital city of Raleigh, has purchased their second Hackney heavy rescue, replacing one purchased in 1993. Chief Vaughan was so impressed with the years of dependable service that the department refused to even look elsewhere.
The 22-ft, 13-compartment body is mounted on a Spartan MetroStar custom cab/chassis with Cummins ISL 400 hp engine. The cab is designed to transport four firefighters and features a 54" high x 34" wide EMS cabinet with roll-up door on the back wall. The chassis is fully multiplexed using V-MUX fully integrated into the Hackney body V-MUX electrical system.
The roof of the body is recessed with a coffin storage compartment on the left and right sides and one full width forward of the light tower nesting zone. Access to the roof is provided by Hackney's exclusion ADS (Auto Deploy Staircase).
Every inch of available space is configured for specific equipment storage for rapid access. Tunnel compartments across the top of the wheelhouse compartments provides dedicated storage for a stokes basket stretcher, up to four long backboards, and folding ladder.
A 35,000 watt, 150-amp PTO generator provides power for: NightScan light tower with six 900 watt MagnaFire light heads; two 900 watt MagnaFire flood lights in upper left and upper right side body (total of 4); 750 watt tripod flood light on the left and right rear body; two 240VAC cord reels with 200-ft 10/4 cable. Power distribution boxes on the end of each reel cable is split into two separate 30-amp, 120VAC circuits to maximum power outlet at 200-ft; 240VAC outlets for the hydraulic rescue tool pumps; and multiple power outlets in and around the cab and body. The unit also features 12VDC scene lighting: Havis-Shields Metal-Halide brow light on the front of the cab; Whelen halogen scene lights on upper left and right side body and two on the rear activated by reverse mode, manually or when respective turn signals are activated.
All emergency warning lights are Whelen LED, plus LED tail lights, rear traffic direction light bar, clearance lights and recessed side wall mounted compartment lights.
40" deep floor-to-ceiling depth permits placement of 36" deep slide-out tool boards and "back-up and go" donning of SCBA's.
SCBA's can be refilled off the on-board cascade system. The four DOT storage cylinders are mounted against the back wall behind the fill enclosure. Counting the wheelskirt tubes, 22 spare SCBA bottles are accommodated on or in the body.
