TAYLOR'S BRIDGE FIRE DEPARTMENT Clinton, North Carolina
Taylor's
Bridge Fire Department is located on busy US Highway
421 between Clinton and Wilmington, NC and is responsible
for protecting a large rural segment of the region.
Due to the high volume of truck traffic associated
with industry and the North Carolina ports, they determined
to purchase an emergency vehicle that was capable
of handling both conventional rescue operations and
service and support for the fire department. The choice
was a Hackney DFC1173R Heavy Rescue. Because of the
rural nature of the area they serve a good turning
radius was imperative, so they chose a Spartan Advantage
MFD custom cab. The added bonus associated with a
large custom cab was use as a rehab area.
The 19.5 ft. body features 11-compartments.
The four compartments forward of the rear wheels are
40" deep from lower floor to top of compartment,
73" high x 48" wide. This feature was important
in the decision making process due to the added storage
capacity afforded by the drop/pinch frame technology
offered by Hackney.
The recessed roof feature two storage
compartments and a dedicated recessed location for
the light tower. The front bumper features Hackney's
unique drop-down bumper which allows storage of the
9000 lb. winch in a 10,000 lb. receiver. The winch
can be used in this location or at any of the other
three location around the body (1 left side, 1 right
side, 1 rear). The rear compartment is set up for
all hydraulic rescue tools, power unit and two hose
reels. The cord reel is also mounted beneath the hydraulic
reels providing a single reel location for deployment
to either side of the body. The left side of the body
features a full length awning for rehab and long term
operations.
A 25,000 watt PTO generator provides
plenty of power for the light tower which is configured
with two 900 watt MagnaFire lamps and two 110,000
lumen metal-halide lamps. Portable lighting is provided
by two Havis-Shield MagnaFire tripod lights mounted
on the left rear body. A 240VAC cord reel and multiple
outlets are located around the body.
Four (4) 6000 psi DOT air storage
cylinders are mounted in the aft section of the wheelhouse
compartment connected to a cascade fill control panel
and two-bottle fill enclosure for refilling SCBA's.
Twelve (12) spare SCBA bottles can be stored in the
aft wheelhouse compartment next to the fill station.
The entire vehicle is multiplexed
and features a full color LCD display screen for controlling
all aspects of the apparatus as well as graphic displays
for warning systems and chassis information such as
fluid levels, recommended service intervals, serial
numbers, warranty information and much more.
