SYKESVILLE-FREEDOM
DISTRICT FIRE DEPARTMENT Sykesville, Maryland
Sykesville, located in rolling hills approximately
20 west of Baltimore, serves a sprawling suburban
area of Maryland with lots of winding, hilly roads.
They have chosen a Hackney DFC1173R heavy rescue mounted
on a Spartan Gladiator custom cab and chassis. The
chassis is powered by a Detroit Series 60, 470 hp
engine. Other features include vertical exhaust stack,
polished alloy wheels, 8-man seating, air conditioning,
Ramco remote controlled mirrors and 20" raised
roof.
The 11-compartment body features
over 750 cu.ft. of useable storage capacity, not counting
the four roof storage compartments. Mounted under
the rear body is a 20,000 lb. hydraulic winch. 10,000
lb. receivers are mounted under the front bumper and
just forward of the left and right rear wheels that
will accommodate a 9,000 lb. portable electric winch.
These receivers are also equipped with removable chromed
rope tie-off rings. A RevolveAir fill station with
integral cascade fill panel is mounted in the left
rear compartment connected to four 6000 psi ASME air
cylinders. Storage accommodations are provided by
multiple adjustable shelves, slide-out and slide-out/tilt-down
trays, two 68" high x 36" deep two-sided
tool boards, vertical air bag storage slots and nine
spare SCBA bottle storage tubes.
A complete set of Hurst tools, electric-powered
hydraulic Simo pumps and two hydraulic hose reels
are mounted in both the left and right sides of the
body, providing mirrored systems on each side of the
truck. Mounted under the hydraulic reels are 150 foot
utility air hose reels connected to the air storage
cylinders. Each of the reels is complimented by slide-out
hose roller guides that prevents the hoses from being
dragged against the body when deployed or re-loaded.
The electrical system features
a multiplexed system that permits remote diagnostics
and programming via telephone connection. A 35kw,
200 amp PTO driven generator is mounted in the left
front compartment protecting the system from road
salts and other corrosives. It powers a NightScan
9000 watt light tower with multi-directional heads
permitting 4500 watts of light to be directed to two
opposite sides of the truck at the same time or all
9000 watt focused in one direction. There are four
1000 watt Focus recessed flood lights in the upper
side body. Two Hannay 240VAC cord reels with 200 feet
of 10/4 cord is provided that splits the power distribution
box into two separate circuits, providing full 30
amp ratings on all four outlets in the box at 200
feet. Warning system include a Federal Q2B siren,
Whelen WS295 electronic siren, Whelen lower zone strobe
lights and Federal Vector light bar and upper zone
lights. All compartments are lighted both with 12V
