Sergeant
Bluff Fire and Rescue, located just south of Sioux
City, is a growing and progressive department that
serves not only the people of Sergeant Bluff but also
those motorist traveling on busy I-29. They have certified
specialized teams that provide mutual aid to a large
area of Iowa, including a trench rescue team. To meet
the growing demands of the department a search was
implemented to located a rescue truck manufacturer
that could supply a vehicle that could consolidate
much of the specialized equipment into one apparatus
and stay within the established budget of the city.
Chief Darien Winfree worked extensively with Hackney
on the initial design, eventually awarding a contract
for the manufacture of the apparatus.
A model DFC1173R heavy rescue was
custom designed around the needs of the department
and mounted on a Spartan MFD custom cab with 10"
raised roof. The 19-ft body features 11 compartments
and 680 cu.ft. of storage capacity, plus two storage
compartments on the recessed roof. The apparatus was
designed to incorporate a variety of response capabilities,
including medical first response, auto extrication,
haz-mat mitigation, collapse rescue and service. Some
of the options chosen were: 300 lb. Speedi-Dry dispenser;
ladder tunnel for 12-ft folding, 14-ft roof and 24-ft
two-section ladders; six pike poles; stokes basket
stretcher and long back boards; rescue tri-pod; long
timbers and shoring panels; hydraulic extrication
tool compartment and numerous equipment slide trays.
A total of seven spare SCBA bottle storage tubes were
installed in the rear wheelhouse panels.
For technical rescue assistance
10,000 lb. receivers were installed on the front,
rear and left and right sides with 12VDC connectors
for a portable winch. The winch is stored in the front
receiver behind a drop-down bumper for easily removal
for relocation to other sites around the apparatus.
A 25kw PTO generator is installed
and protected from road spray in the left front compartment
and powers a NightScan light tower with six 900watt
MagnaFire lamps with multi-directional positioning
capability. Fixed MagnaFire lamps are installed on
the upper left and right side of the body and front
of the cab. Two MagnaFire tripod flood lights are
installed on the left rear body. A 200-ft,10/4 cord
reel and multiple power outlets round out the 120/240VAC
electrical system.
For service support a 6000 psi Fill
Enclosure and cascade control panel is provided for
on-scene SCBA refill capability. A 6000 psi hose reel
in connected to the fill station to provide air for
trench rescue operations.
