SCOTLAND COUNTY RESCUE SQUAD LAURINBURG, North Carolina
Scotland County Rescue Squad in
Laurinburg, North Carolina serves the entire county
located in the south central part of the state along
US Highway 74. This is a very busy stretch of highway
that runs from Charlotte to Myrtle Beach and will
soon be where I-74, now under construction, will pass.
They chose a Hackney model DF0973RC heavy rescue mounted
on a Freightliner FL70 4-door cab and chassis with
a Cummins ISC 315 hp engine, raised cab roof, and
four SCBA seats.
The recessed roof compartment provided
space for a 9,000 watt NightScan light tower and two
huge aluminum storage boxes for ladders and infrequently
accessed bulk equipment. A 25 kw Onan PTO generator
supplied power to the light tower, tripod flood lights,
Hannay electric rewind cord reels, and multiple outlets
throughout the apparatus. Each compartment was equipped
with slide-tilt adjustable trays. The Hackney signature
transverse tunnel storage in the top of the wheelhouse
compartment provides access to one stokes basket stretcher,
six long backboards, and a 12 ft. folding ladder,
each of which is easily accessible from either the
street side or the curb side of the body. The remaining
space in the 74" wide wheelhouse compartment
was divided for placement of 35" wide x 88"
deep long two-way transverse slide-out trays on the
floor (one each side of the partition) and adjustable
slide-tilt trays above them. The roadside contained
seven (7) slots for storage of air bags and six (6)
storage tubes for spare SCBA bottles. The right forward
compartments contained a 68" high x 36"
deep two-sided slide-out tool board and a four (4)
bottle slide-out SCBA rack. The SCBA rack allows rapid
access to air packs in a "back-up and go"
configuration. Two Hannay hydraulic reels with a dual
captive roller assembly, an adjustable slide-tilt
tray, and a fixed slide-out tray make the rear bay
perfect for a full array of hydraulic extrication
tools. The mirror finish stainless steel front bumper
featured a 12,000 lb. Ramsey winch.
It just so happened that we had
a stock unit on the ground that was similar to what
they needed. The unit was well equipped with a roof
compartment to store a 9,000 watt light tower and
two aluminum storage boxes for ladders, etc. A 25
kw PTO generator is used to power the light tower,
a 500 watt tripod Tele-Light, a Hannay electric rewind
cord reel, and four outlets. Each compartment was
equipped with slide-tilt adjustable trays for access
to each space. A stokes/ (2)backboard/ ladder rack
was installed across the top of the wheelhouse compartment
along with storage for (4) more backboards. The wheelhouse
was split with two (2) fixed transverse 1000 lb. trays
and one adjustable slide/tilt tray. The roadside contained
seven (7) slots for storage of air bags and six (6)
storage tubes for spare SCBA bottles. The opposite
side, contained a slide-out toolboard and a four (4)
bottle slide-out SCBA rack. The SCBA rack allows split-second
access to air packs when time is an issue. Two Hannay
hydraulic reels with dual captive roller assemblies,
an adjustable slide-tilt tray, and a fixed slide-out
tray all make the rear perfect for extrication.
The chassis was a Freightliner FL70
4-door with a Cummins 315 hp engine and a MD3060 six
speed transmission and a Whelen NFPA 1901 strobe light
package.
