Macomb Township and Chief Raymond A. Ahonen, Michigan
took delivery of their new Hackney heavy rescue immediately
following its display at the 2003 FDIC in Indianapolis.
The Hackney DFC1173R Heavy Rescue was mounted on the
all new Spartan Evolution custom cab/chassis and was
the most talked about rescue truck at the show.
The Spartan Gladiator Evolution
featured a LFD cab with 20" raised roof providing
space in the rear for a two-man command center. It
is powered by a Caterpillar C10 engine and Allison
3000EV transmission.
The 19.5 foot long body features
a whooping 735 cu.ft. of useable storage capacity
in the lower compartments, plus two 16-foot long storage
compartments on the recessed roof. The truck is designed
to serve multiple task conventional rescue,
technical rescue, haz-mat and incident command operations.
The command center is located in
the rear of the cab and features an "L"
shaped desk with two swivel high back seats with FMVSS
certified seatbelts. The three overhead cabinets are
constructed of aluminum with hinged doors for storage
of resource materials and small instrumentation. The
desk top is constructed of stainless steel. The compartment
is lighted by conventional 12VDC lights and 120AC
flourescent lighting. 120VAC strip outlets are provided
around the perimeter of the "L" shaped desk
surface.
A 35,000 watt Onan PTO generator
powers the following: NightScan telescoping light
tower featuring six MagnaFire IR lamp heads that articulate
is opposing directions; two MagnaFire IR flood lights
on the upper left and right side body; one MagnaFire
IR on the upper rear body; and two MagnaFire IR portable
tri-pod lights on the left rear. Two Hannay cord reels
provide remote power through four outlet junction
boxes on the 200-foot cord.
The forward wheelhouse compartment
provides dedicated storage for twenty sheets of plywood,
86" long 4x4 and 6x6 shoring timbers, two rescue
tri-pods, one stokes basket stretchers, two long backboards
and folding 12-foot ladder.
The aft wheelhouse compartment provides
storage for four 6000 psi DOT air cylinders connected
to the cascade system and twelve spare SCBA bottle
storage tubes.
Other special storage provisions
is provided by two 74" high x 36" deep two-sided
slide-out tool boards constructed of peg-board style
aluminum, separate isolated and vented rope storage
compartment, vertical rescue air bag storage slots,
and multiple adjustable shelves and slide-out trays.
The rear compartment is specifically dedicated to
extrication tools and features a 600 lb. tray on the
lower floor for Hurst portable power unit, cutter
and spreader; two adjustable slide/tilt trays for
rams, chains and other accessories, two electric rewind
hydraulic reels in the top connected to a Simo pump
and an electric rewind utility air hose reel centered
beneath the hydraulic reels. A two-bottle fill enclosure
with integral cascade fill control panel is mounted
in the right rear compartment.
10,000 lb. receivers are mounted
under the front and rear bumper and just forward of
the rear wheels. The receivers are provided with a
9,000 lb. portable winch and powered connection and
portable tow-ring for attachment of rappelling ropes.
Emergency lighting is provided by
Whelen LED lights. Other warning devices include a
Federal Q2B, chromed bell on the right bumper and
electronic siren. A FireCom intercom system was installed
for communications.
