The Lynchburg Fire Department protects the citizens
and industry of Lynchburg, which also goes by the
moniker of "The City of Seven Hills". Located
at the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, the
streets of Lynchburg resemble those of San Francisco,
some almost vertical. When designing their new rescue
truck, one of the prime considerations was power enough
to climb these grades, often from a dead stop. They
chose to purchase their second Hackney mounted on
a Spartan MFD cab/chassis with 10" raised roof.
The powertrain was important, so the new Cummins ILS370
engine was selected, providing 370 "beefy"
horses that will handle any of the "seven hills"
without difficulty.
The Hackney DFC1173R heavy rescue body was selected
to maximize storage capacity for the many varieties
of missions for which it must handle within the maneuverable
wheelbase. Although the wheelbase is only 183",
the body still provides a whooping 700 cubic feet
of useable storage, plus the three large tub compartments
on the recessed roof. Within the compartments are
six 6000 psi DOT air cylinders connected to a two-bottle
cascade fill enclosure. Twelve spare SCBA bottles
are stored in front of the air cylinder rack. The
rear compartment measures 73" high x 42"
wide x 40" deep and is used to store all hydraulic
extrication tools. One slide-out tray for the spreader,
cutter and portable power unit is on the floor and
two adjustable slide-out and tilt-down trays above
provide storage for the rams, fuel, hoses, chains
and other accessories. Two hydraulic hose reels in
mounted in the top of compartment. Other storage is
provided using 36" deep floor to ceiling depth
slide-out trays and adjustable shelves, 68" high
x 36" deep two-sided slide-out tool board, two
long backboards and stokes basket stretcher. A full
body length awning is provided on the right side for
rehab and incident command operations.
A locking ALS cabinet with roll-up
door was installed on the back wall of the cab.
A 12,000 lb. winch is installed
in the extended front bumper. 10,000# receiver points
are provided on the left and right sides of the body
and under the rear step bumper. Detachable rescue
rope tie-off rings mount in the receivers, as well
as a 9000 lb. portable winch. The extended front bumper
also features an electric rewind hydraulic hose reel
with pre-connected Omni rescue tool.
The generator is an Onan 25,000
watt PTO mounted in the left front compartment to
protect the components from road salt and other corrosive
elements. The generator powers a 9000 watt NightScan
light tower mounted in the forward section of the
recessed roof, four upper side body 1000 watt flood
lights, two rear mounted tri-pod flood lights, two
240VAC cord reels and multiple outlets. One 1000 watt
flood light is mounted on the front of the cab that
illuminates the work zone in the of the rescue truck.
