Kirwan Heights serves a district along I-79 just south of Pittsburgh. The department required a single apparatus that would serve multiple functions and selected Hackney for its vast storage capacity. They chose a 21.5-ft long, 13-compartment body mounted on a Spartan Gladiator LFD Cab with 20” raised roof. The Spartan features a Cummins ISL365 engine with eight (8) seating positions. Three aluminum storage compartments are installed on the upper rear wall.

The six forward compartments are provided with drop-down step platforms that provide safe access to upper storage areas of the body. The rear compartment, behind the axle, is transverse below the frame height stores an all-level ambulance cot for standby operations with the RIT team.

Multiple long backboards are also stored in separate transverse slots in this compartment. In the upper section of the back compartment is a tunnel for storage of a 24-ft two-section and 14-ft roof ladder, along with six pike poles.

The recessed roof has two coffin compartments, one on the left measuring 16-ft long and one on the right measuring just over 14-ft long. In a separate area in the forward section of the recessed roof is a Will-Burt light tower with six MagnaFire, multi-directional light heads.

A two-bottle SCBA fill enclosure is mounted in the #2 curb side compartment with 4-bank cascade panel and four 6000 psi DOT air cylinders.

The cab and body are fully multiplexed and feature a color LCD control panel on the cab dash. The panel provides graphics for open doors and light tower extension and has scrolling text with warning alerts. All warning lights are Whelen LED. A LED traffic director light bar is provided on the rear. All compartments feature vertically mounted LED strip lights providing lighting above and below all shelves and trays.

A 35,000 watt Onan PTO generator provide power for the light tower, four upper side body 900-watt flood lights, one 900-watt upper rear flood, and two 750-watt tripod floods; two hydraulic pumps,; two cord reels and an assortment of interior and exterior outlets.

An utility air hose reel in provided plumbed to the cascade air cylinder with adjustable regulator. Four (4) Hurst hydraulic hose reels are provide, two each side plumbed to respective Simo 240VAC pumps.

The six compartments forward of the rear wheels are 40” deep floor-to-ceiling facilitated by incorporation of the Hackney drop/pinch frame. Not the fold-down step platforms forward of the rear wheels. Extrication tools are accessed via a roll-up door on the back of the body.
A transverse tunnel is provided in the forward wheelhouse compartment for stokes basket and folding ladder. Three 36” deep, full height slide-out tool boards provide an enormous amount of tool storage in the front compartment. An 80# Speedi-Dry hopper in the skirt behind the rear wheels.
