The Grand Island Fire Company, located
on the island of Grand Island between Lake Ontario
and Lake Erie, serves a highly populated traffic corridor
on Interstate 190 and the busy shipping channels of
Niagara River. The area provides a rich environment
for multiple types of emergency responses from routine
traffic accidents to industrial accidents and rescues.
A conventional rescue would not serve the needs of
this fire company, so Grand Island chose a Hackney
DFC1164R Heavy Rescue mounted on a Spartan MFD, 6-man
cab with 10" raised roof.
A 25,000 watt Onan PTO generator
provides fail-proof power for the 9000 watt light
tower, two MagnaFire tri-pod flood lights, four 900
watt upper side body flood lights, two 240VAC cord
reels and multiple 120/240 volt outlets.
The emergency lighting package includes
a Weldon NFPA wrap-around, all-LED light bar on the
front of the cab. All flashing lights are LED. Headlight
wag-wags provide additional traffic clearance. A Federal
Q2B is mounted on the extended front bumper and augmented
by a PA300 electronic siren with two 100 watt speakers
and dual Stutterton air horns. All the 12-volt electrical
functions are controlled by the multiplexed electrical
system with Vista Screen control panel.
The rear compartment over the step
bumper is 64" high x 42" wide x 40"
deep and set up for all extrication equipment. The
compartment interior provides dedicated storage features
that include adjustable shelves, slide-out tray and
two slide-out tool boards that measure 60" high
x 36" deep floor to ceiling. The recessed roof
provides additional storage space and includes a 174"
long x 32" wide x 12" high compartment on
the left side and 144" long x 26" wide x
12" high compartment on the right side. 10,000
lb. receivers are installed on the left and right
side of the apparatus, just forward of the rear wheels
for attachment of a portable winch and rope tie-off
rings.
