Chief Kurt
Johnson and the apparatus committee of the Dupo Fire
Protection District saw the fruit of months of labor
when their new Hackney heavy rescue was delivered
in the spring of 2004. The committee was tasked with
procuring an apparatus that would serve a number of
tasks within the district, task ranging from rescue
operations to fire ground support to service company
operations and rehab functions. They selected Hackney
to complete the design process using their versatile
DFC1173R model body and a Spartan Advantage 6-man
custom cab and chassis based on its outstanding references
for durability and the service offered by Battalion
3, the regional Hackney dealer. The district sits
along busy I-255 and a high capacity rail system serving
the industrial enterprises south of St. Louis.
The 19.5-ft long body features a enormous 680 cu.ft.
of storage capacity, excluding the two huge compartments
located on the recessed roof. The Hackney drop/pinch
frame permits installation of the 25-kw PTO generator
inside the left front compartment, isolating it away
from the serious corrosive environment prevalent on
the highway system during the winter months. The unique
rear extrication compartment (see drawing and photo)
provides more than ample space for storage of all
hydraulic rescue tools, two hydraulic hose reels and
an utility air hose reel.
A SCBA fill enclosure and cascade
system is installed in the left rear compartment convenient
to the nine spare bottle storage tubes in the aft
section of the wheelhouse compartment. Four 6000 psi
DOT air storage cylinders are mounted behind these
tubes for convenient service access.
Four transverse tunnels are provided in the fore and
aft wheelhouse compartments for stokes basket, two
long backboards and a 12-ft folding ladder. The second
left side compartment features three (3) 60"
high x 36" deep two-sided slide-out tool boards
for storage of tools and salvage equipment. All remaining
space is filled with adjustable shelves and slide-out
trays for optimal inventory access. A full length
awning is installed on the right side for long term
rehab and special ops purposes.
Mounted across the forward
section of the recessed roof is a Will-Burt NightScan
light tower. Two MagnaFire tri-pod flood lights are
installed on the left rear of the body. Two Hannay
cord reels are equipped with 200-ft 10/4 cord with
junction boxes that provide two individual 30-amp
circuits on each cord for maximum amperage reserves
at the end of the 200-ft run. An automatic transfer
switch permits use of an on-board refrigerator from
both the generator and shorepower. A 2-hp, 7.9 cfm
air compressor provides plenty of utility air for
general purpose use or operation of rescue chisels/hammers
and air bags via a 150-ft air hose reel. Emergency
lights and siren are all Code 3 with the exception
of the Federal Q2B siren on the front bumper.
