The Drexel Heights Fire District
serves Southwestern Tucson between Interstate 19 and
US Highway 86. The department provides a wide array
of services to the community, including providing
a regional hazardous materials and technical rescue
response team.
The District selected a Hackney DFC1173ADS Heavy Rescue
to incorporate the requirements for the response teams.
Chief Douglas Chappell and his team worked with Hackney
in the development of the first Automatic Deploy Staircase
(ADS).
The department determined the need
for the ADS when they realized the difficulty in deploying
the vast amount of equipment from a single apparatus.
The ADS provided safe, useable storage space on the
roof, minimizing the requirement for increasing the
wheelbase.
The body is mounted on a Spartan Diamond LFD cab with
a 221 wheelbase. The engine is a Cummins ISL350
with a 6-speed Allison automatic transmission. The
3-door cab provides an environmentally controlled
command center.
The cab includes a command
desk with stainless steel counter top and aluminum
upper storage cabinet on the street side wall. An
interior/exterior accessed compartment is directly
behind the driver for monitoring equipment. The cab
will transport four belted firefighters. Full body
length awnings are located on the left and right sides
of the body to provide further logistics support and
protection from the boiling Arizona sun.
Two 26 wide compartments
are located on the roof. A NightScan light tower with
multi-directional flood light heads is nested at the
front of the recessed roof. Two tripod flood lights
are on the rear body. Lighting and power outlets and
reels are supplied by a 25-kw PTO generator located
inside the left front compartment.
The center section of the front bumper hinges down
accessing a 9000 lb Warn portable winch. It can be
operated from this positioned or moved to receivers
located on the left, right and rear of the body.
A two-bottle SCBA fill station
is provided supplied by six (6) 6000 psi DOT air cylinders.
All emergency warning lights are Whelen LED technology
controlled by Hackneys V-MUX multiplexed electrical
system.
