CROSSROADS
VOLUNTEER FIRE DEPARTMENT Lucama, North Carolina
The Crossroads Volunteer Fire Department
serves southern Wilson County along US Highway 301,
US Highway 117 and Interstate 95. Crossroads had earlier
identified the requirements for a multi-tasked emergency
response vehicle that would provide added response
resources, rehab capabilities and increase their ISO
rating. After much research they selected a Hackney
model DFC1173R.
The chassis of choice was a Spartan
Advantage with 10" raised roof and six man cab.
The spacious interior and powerful cooling and heating
systems provides ample space for rehab operations.
A few of the other chassis options chosen were alloy
wheels, remote controlled heated mirrors, air horns
and chromed vertical exhaust.
The 680 cu.ft., 19.5-ft long body
includes four (4) 73" high x 48" wide x
40" deep (full height) compartments forward of
the rear axle; two compartments over the rear axle
(one 52" wide x 48" high x transverse and
one 27"wide x 48" high x transverse); two
40" wide x 73" high x 24" deep behind
the rear axle; and one compartment on the back 73"
high x 42" wide x 40" deep for extrication
tools and equipment.
The right (curb) side forward wheelhouse
compartment was set up for command operations and
included a slide-out and tilt-down desk with 3"
deep storage beneath the lid. A second plexiglass
lid was provided for placement of maps and documents
for during operations to protect them from wind and
water. Above the slide-out desk is a resource library.
A total of thirty (30) spare SCBA
bottles are stored in PVC tubes supporting a four-bank
Bauer cascade fill station. The 6000 psi DOT cylinders
are stored horizontally in the aft wheelhouse compartment
(see drawing). Two (2) 68" high x 36" deep
two-sided slide-out tool boards provide convenient
storage for salvage and hand tools.
The recessed roof zone provides
additional storage of infrequently used tools in two
coffin compartments. The Will-Burt light tower nests
out of the way across the front of the recessed roof
area.Full body length retractable awnings are installed
on both the left and right sides of the body providing
additional rehab and command facilities.
Lighting is provided through the multiplexed electrical
system and includes Whelen LED tail lights, LED marker
lights, LED traffic advisor and a combination of LED
and strobe emergency zone lights. Whelen 123VDC halogen
scene lights are installed; two left side, two right
side and two rear. The rear lights automatically activate
in the reverse mode. Audible warning is provided with
a Federal Q2B and Whelen WS295 sirens.
A
25kw Onan PTO generator provides power to the light
tower with six (6) 900 watt MagnFire lamps that are
multi-directional, cord reel, multiple exterior and
interior outlets, four (4) upper side body 900 watt
MagnaFire flood lights and 900 watt MagnaFire brow
light on the front of the cab. In addition to the
12VDC compartment lights, each compartment is also
furnished with 110V fluorescent lighting.
