COAL TOWNSHIP FIRE DEPARTMENT
Coal Township, Pennsylvania
Coal Township, located north of Harrisburg and west of I-81, is the proud owner of a Hackney DFC1173R Heavy Rescue. Their new Hackney replaces an outdated rescue purchased nearly 20 years earlier and now gives them the ability to incorporate all rescue equipment into a single, organized response vehicle.
The 19.5-ft body features 11-compartments: two 48” wide x 73” high x 40” deep forward of the rear wheels; two 48” high x transverse over the rear wheels; one 40” wide x 68” high behind the rear wheels; and a 42” wide x 68” high x 40” deep extrication tool compartment at the rear. Plus, the recessed roof has two 194” long storage compartments, plus a specially designed storage area for a 24-ft two-section ladder.
A 9000 lb. Warn portable winch is installed in the front bumper behind a drop down access door integral to the bumper. This location serves as storage for the winch as well as an operational point. 10,000 lb. receivers are installed in the bumper, left and right side body and under rear bumper, providing operational points all around the apparatus.
The right front compartment serves as a command and operations point. It features a 6 cu.ft. refrigerator, locking storage cabinet for camera other electronic equipment and resource materials and a slide-out and tilt-down desk with hinged Plexiglass cover for placement of maps and other logistics materials.
A four-bank SCBA cascade fill station is located in the right rear compartment. All other compartments are complemented with slide-out trays, adjustable shelves, air bag storage slots, transverse tunnels for two stokes baskets, two long backboards and a folding ladder.
The rear extrication compartment (see top photo) provides a single access location for all hydraulic rescue tools, two hydraulic hose reels and one utility air hose reel.
Electrical power is provided by an ONAN 25kw PTO generator mounted inside the left front compartment, protecting it from harsh winter road salt conditions. It powers two cord reels, left and right side 900 watt flood lights, two rear mounted tripod flood lights and 900 watt brow light on the front of the cab.
All warning lights, tail lights and clearance lights are LED.
Each compartment was custom designed to accommodate specific equipment. The rear compartment is designed for rapid deployment of hydraulic rescue tools with pre-connected hydraulic hose reels. Above the reels is a ladder tunnel that accommodates a 14-ft roof, 24-ft extension and up to 14-ft pike poles. Note the slide-out trays over the rear wheels specially designed for air shores and related technical rescue equipment. The large tray forward of the wheels is packed with cribbing.
