The City of Beloit, located at the intersection of Interstates 39, 43 and 90 protects a highway and rail zone with heavy traffic servicing Chicago, Milwaukee and Rockford areas. That, combined with a growing population of almost 40,000 residents, postures the Beloit Fire Department with an increasing number of technical rescue responses. The need to move a huge volume of technical rescue equipment in a single response vehicle prompted the department to select a Hackney because of its drop/pinch frame technology that vastly increases storage capacity without increasing the wheelbase. The 19.5-ft body features 11 compartments, plus three coffin compartments in the recessed roof. The body is mounted on a Spartan MFD chassis with a 10” raised roof and seats six firefighters, five with SCBA seats.
A 35kw Onan PTO generator is installed in the left front compartment and protected from the high salt concentrations associated with Wisconsin highways during the winter months. The generator operates a six lamp light
tower, five flood recessed flood lights, a front cab brow flood light, two tripod flood lights, two cord reels, 7.9 cfm air compressor, Miller plasma cutter, Ram fans and two Centaur hydraulic pumps.
Ladder storage includes a 10-ft folding, 14-ft roof and 24-ft two-section.
The electrical system is fully multiplexed and features a color VISTA control panel accessible to the driver and officer. Whelen LED warning lights, LED tail lights, LED traffic director and all LED clearance and tail lights provide dependable lighting with a low amperage draw.
Located in the right rear wheel skirt panel is a slide-out Speedi-Dry hopper that holds 80 lbs of granular material with quick-discharge valve. Full body length awnings provide logistics and rehab zones around the perimeter. 10,000 lb. receivers are located front, rear and both sides for placement of a 9000 Warn portable winch or rope tie-off rings. The winch is stored in the drop-down front bumper compartment. Not one inch of space is wasted with adjustable shelves and slide trays strategically placed for specific equipment storage.
Each compartment was custom designed to accommodate specific equipment. The rear compartment is designed for rapid deployment of hydraulic rescue tools with pre-connected hydraulic hose reels. Above the reels is a ladder tunnel that accommodates a 14-ft roof, 24-ft extension and up to 14-ft pike poles. Note the slide-out trays over the rear wheels specially designed for air shores and related technical rescue equipment. The large tray forward of the wheels is packed with cribbing.
