The State of West Virginia Office of Emergency Services
has placed the last of a total of twelve (12) Hackney
TC1482 Haz-Mat Tractor and Trailers into service as
part of its expanding regional response teams concept.
The trailers are pulled by Freightliner FL112 tractors
with 410 hp Caterpillar engines and Allison HD4060
transmissions, plenty of power for any of the steep
West Virginia passes.
Each trailer is equipped with a 40,000 watt PTO generator
that powers a 20 hp, 26.5 cfm breathing air compressor
for rapid, on-site SCBA recharging. The system chosen
was the Scott Avenger 36 with RevolveAir computerized
fill station. The Avenger, using the Ingersoll-Rand
compressor, operates at only 950 rpm's, providing
a very quiet working environment, the only known compressor
system that runs that quietly. The generator also
powers a NightScan light tower with six 950 watt MagnaFire
lamps with multi-directional lighting capability.
Two removable tri-pod MagnaFire telescoping lights
are mounted on the rear of the trailer.
An OSHA compliant observation platform that can be
erected by one man in under three minutes is mounted
on the roof and accessible from the roof access ladder.
A 3-man command center is located on the rear of
the trailer permitting one-step up entrance. The "L"
shaped cabinet setup is constructed of aluminum hinged
door upper storage cabinets. The "L" shaped
desk area is constructed of 304 stainless steel, making
it safe to use in haz-cat operations. A small refrigerator
is located in the right rear corner. The space is
heated and air conditioned and can operate from either
the trailer generator or from a shorepower connection.
Excluding the command center, over 950 cu.ft. of
storage space is provided behind the exterior roll-up
doors. Space is provided for rapid deployment decon
tents, decon shower and hot water units, decon protective
clothing, testing equipment and much more.
Three of a total
of twelve units serving the State of West Virginia
regional response teams.
