The Metro-Washington Airport Authority
Fire-Rescue protects both the Ronald Reagan National
Airport and Dulles International Airport, two of the
nations busiest. The hazardous materials response
team was given the task of replacing an existing apparatus
dedicated to this type of response with a modern apparatus
that provided a high volume storage capability. They
selected a Hackney DF1173R with custom modifications
to meet their specific requirements.
The 24-foot body features a recessed
roof with four additional "coffin" style
storage compartments. Storage capacity is a whopping
755 cu.ft., excluding the right front command compartment
and the roof compartments. A one-man command module
is provided in the right front compartment that has
an independent air conditioner and heater, desk and
reference. The command operations can be extended
beneath the right side mounted awning.
The body is mounted on a Kenworth
T300. The multiplexed electrical system provides state-of-the-art
performance of the emergency lights, scene lights,
and all other 12VDC electrical components. Generator
power is provided by a 25KW PTO for powering the six
body mounted flood lights and multiple outlets.
