The Orlando Fire Department enhanced their response
capabilities by adding their second Hackney to the
fleet. This unit is dedicated strictly to hazardous
materials responses and incorporates two years of
planning and design work by the task force assigned
to this project.
The Hackney DFC1182R Haz-Mat body is mounted on a
Sutphen custom cab and chassis powered by a Caterpillar
C12, 425 hp engine. The forward cab tilts independently
from the rear cab section, which serves as the command
center. The command center was specially designed
to accommodate two technicians operating from a stainless
steel work counter and desk across the forward wall.
Two swivel, FMVSS certified seats provide a comfortable
work environment. The rear wall features floor to
ceiling aluminum cabinets for storage of testing equipment
and resource materials. Located on the left side next
to the desk is a command center operated telescoping
tower for the weather station.
A 20kw Harrison hydraulic generator
provides power for the 9000 watt light tower, four
upper side body flood lights, two tri-pod flood lights,
two cord reels with 200-feet of 10/4 cord, multiple
power outlets interior and exterior, and fluorescent
lighting in the command center and all exterior compartments.
An automatic transfer relay provides power from both
the shorepower inlet and generator to the interior
outlets to keep all monitoring equipment charged and
provide stationary lighting while in the station.
A 185 cfm, PTO driven screw compressor
is installed under the cab and provides high volume
air to left and right side industrial air outlets
and two utility air hose reels.
Warning lights are Whelen LED upper
and lower zone. A Whelen LED traffic advisor provides
traffic protection on the super busy Orlando freeways.
The cavernous 22-foot long body
is mounted on Hackneys exclusive drop/pinch
frame providing huge, unencumbered storage capacity.
There are four 52" wide x 82" high x 40"
deep compartments ahead of the rear wheels; two wheelhouse
compartments (one 52" wide x 57" high x
transverse and one 27" wide x 57" high x
transverse). There are three compartments behind the
rear wheels. The left rear measure 60" wide x
78" high x 24" deep. The right rear measures
60" wide x 78" high x 67" deep and
features a fold-down ramp on the forward section for
loading and unloading overpack drums. The left side
has five 23" wide x 64" deep adjustable
shelves. The back compartment over the step bumper
accesses the aft right rear compartments.
Full length awnings are installed
on both sides of the body providing shelter from the
growling central Florida sun. Misters are set up on
each end to providing added cooling.
The recessed roof provides
additional storage compartments for infrequently used
bulk equipment. Access to the roof is provided by
a OSHA compliant ladder on the right rear of the body.
