COUNTY OF ERIE – DEPARTMENT OF EMERGENCY SERVICES
Buffalo, New York
Erie County Emergency Services provides a regional response team for hazmat incidents in the greater Buffalo area. In an attempt to consolidate the vast array of equipment and supplies required for all types of incidents they selected Hackney to design a tandem axle 38-ft trailer with 16 interior compartments and four roof top compartments.
The trailer has awnings on both sides for staging and rehab operations. One compartment over the fifth wheel is dedicated to all instruments and features 120VAC power strips for recharging from either the shorepower or generator. Twelve complete SCBA’s are mounted on a single slide-out rack with spare bottle storage tubes located adjacent. Dedicated compartments are provided for 95-gallon and 55-gallon overpack drums and hand carts.
The 25kw tractor mounted PTO generator provides power for the light tower, four upper side body flood lights, removable tripod flood lights and cord reels.
The trailer is multiplexed and fully compatible to the V-Mux system on the Spartan tractor. All lighting, including emergency lights, are LED.
The hazmat trailer is pulled by a Spartan Gladiator LFD tractor with 20” raised roof with seating for 10 technicians. The Cummins ISL, 400hp engine has no problem pulling the load. Although just over 56-ft long, the short wheelbase permits this apparatus to turn around in less space than most pumpers.
Note the NightScan light tower in the full extended position. It is powered by 25,000 watt PTO generator connected to the trailer through a Hackney exclusive umbilical quick-disconnect system.
16-compartments provide more than enough space to transport a vast array of hazmat equipment, including overpack drums stored low to the ground for safe and easy retrieval. Note the two Speed-Dri hoppers in the #3 compartment that hold over 1000 lbs. of the granular absorbent. Four roof top compartments accommodate pigs and other types of lightweight or bulky equipment and supplies. 43” deep compartments from top to bottom of floor makes inventory easy to store and rapid identification and retrieval.
