AUBURN HILLS FIRE DEPARTMENT Auburn Hills, Michigan
Auburn Hills, between Detroit and
Pontiac, serves an area that includes the nations
largest automobile manufacturers. The department required
a heavy rescue that could double as a hazardous materials
response vehicle, accommodating the vast variety of
equipment required for those types of responses, and
serving as a command and resource center.
AHFD selected the Hackney DFC1173R
Heavy Rescue body mounted on a HME 1871 LFD with 24"
raised roof, because of its vast amount of storage
volume. The chassis is powered by a Detroit Series
60 and Allison HD4060. The left rear cab door was
deleted to permit full utilization of the rear of
the cab for a command and resource operations center.
An L-shaped desk extends across the rear and left
side walls with large wall storage cabinets above.
Three seats are placed behind the officer and driver.
The body features a recessed roof
with two (2) 194-inch-long compartments and a 9000-watt
light tower below the roof line.
The right front compartment incorporates
two hoppers for dispensing up to 200 lbs. of soda
ash and oil dry into 5 gallon buckets. The left wheelhouse
compartment holds 24 spare SCBA bottles, while the
right wheelhouse boasts storage and easy access to
six (6) 6000 psi DOT air cylinders at floor level
and a 73" x 60" slide-out tray rated at
1,000 lbs. The air cylinders are connected to a RevolveAir
fill enclosure with integral cascade fill panel mounted
in the back compartment.
Because of the seating arrangement
in the command center, four (4) extra complete SCBAs
are stored on a slide-out rack in a compartment for
"back-up and go" donning. Sixteen (16) slide-out
and slide/tilt trays round out the equipment storage
within the body.
A 40-kw, 3-phase PTO generator is
mounted in the lower left front compartment behind
a stainless steel panel that protects the unit from
the severe salt overspray thats so prevalent
in the area. The generator powers the light tower
plus recessed perimeter flood lights on the upper
side body and tripod flood lights on the rear. The
generator also provides power to two (2) cord reels
and all electrical outlets in the command center.
It will serve as a backup power source for the emergency
operations center in case of power failure.
Beneath the body on the left and
right are four (4) rope tie-off rings rated at 10,000
lbs each.
