The Independent Hose Company has the distinction of being the oldest volunteer fire department in Maryland, established in 1818. The first piece of equipment ever purchased by the department was a hand engine manufactured in 1764. Today it is made up of approximately 250 volunteers who are very proud of their heritage. Frederick is a rapidly growing area located just west of Baltimore along Interstate 70.
The department chose a Hackney model CR0482R Emergency Support Vehicle to transport the Advanced Technical Rescue Team and specialized team equipment. The chassis of choice was an International 7400 with 330-hp engine and vertical exhaust. The body is mounted on a drop/pinch frame that vastly expanded the storage capacity in the huge forward compartment. Although sporting a short 182” wheelbase and only four ground-level rescue compartments, it still provides over 450 cu.ft. of storage capacity, plus the recessed roof provides two large coffin compartments. The rear of the body features a logistics and rehabilitation room that provides a heated and air conditioned environment. A curb side entrance doors gains access to a desk with upper and lower cabinets on the road side wall and a two-man flip-down seat on the forward wall. Electrically deployed awnings are provided on both sides of the body.
A 25-kw PTO generator provides power for (6) 900-watt MagnaFire flood lights, two on each side, one on the rear and one on the front of the body; (2) removable tripod flood lights on the left rear body; cord reel; air conditioner and heaters; fluorescent lighting; and multiple interior and exterior power outlets.
All compartment lights are LED strip type recessed into the side walls for unobstructed use. A textual message center on the dash provides critical status information regarding doors open, roof compartment lids open and awning deployed. All warning lights are Whelen LED. The siren is a Federal electronic Q.
